Reclamation farming: Taking back a family legacy
Angela Dawson defines reclamation farming for herself as a fourth-generation farmer reclaiming her family’s farming legacy lost two generations ago. Through her perseverance and family history in agriculture, Angela, who identifies as a black indigenous woman, found a way to help others in her same situation and formed Forty Acre Co-op.
Sitting on 40 acres in Sandstone, Minnesota, Forty Acre Co-op is proud to be the first national black farmer co-op since the reconstruction era in the United States. The purpose and mission of the cooperative is to promote agricultural development, as well as economic equity for socially disadvantaged farmers.
