A well-designed disaster supply kit can be invaluable during a disaster. Be sure to plan for the number of employees who may need it.

The American Red Cross recommends that your supply kit include at least the following:

  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Battery-powered radio
  • Nonperishable foods to sustain each person for one day, such as ready-to-eat canned meals, meats, fruits, vegetables and juice, as well as high-energy granola and energy bars
  • 1 gallon of water per person, per day
  • First- aid kit
  • Mylar blankets
  • Disposable plates, cups and utensils
  • Nonelectric can opener
  • Personal hygiene items, such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, combs, brushes, contact lens solution and feminine products
  • Plastic garbage bags

Additional tips

To complement your disaster supply kit:

  • Get a weather alert radio and monitor it
  • Post emergency numbers and procedures throughout your facility
  • Plan evacuation routes and procedures for employees and customers, and ensure that all employees have copies of the plans
  • Plan ahead to accommodate individuals with special needs
